Dynamic Benefits of Floor Sensors in your Commercial Building

If you have an office, commercial, or industrial space or building, do you know where your visitors are?

You may have a general idea based on the type of businesses located in the structure and the hours at which they operate, but what if you had access to dynamic information regarding exactly where each individual was at any given time? What could you do with that information? The floor sensor technology gives you a perfect picture of how people are moving in your space and where they are – it’s up to you to harness that power and you can do amazing things with it!

Data for People Management to Energy Consumption

On a basic level, floor sensors can do simple things like turning on the lights when a person enters the room. But more sophisticated sensors, such as those placed in the flooring itself, can receive information regarding how many people are in the room and exactly where they are. This data can be used for a multitude of purposes, from people management to energy conservation.

Smart Management

Let’s say you own or manage a museum. One of your priorities is going to be setting up exhibits in such a way that people can move through them without over-crowding. With flooring sensors connected to analytic software you can tell how people are moving through the space, including the amount of time each individual pauses to look at a piece and the path they take to the next one. This information can be used to adjust the layout of the exhibit if crowding occurs at any location to move people through the space in the most effective way.

In Case of Emergency

Floor sensors can also be used to manage energy usage and security in the building as a whole. For instance, in a hotel with multiple conference rooms and event spaces, flooring sensors can determine how many people are in each room and where they are. Heating and air conditioning units may then be programmed to dynamically adjust the temperature based on the number of warm bodies in each space. This works much more efficiently than a thermostat, which can only adjust the temperature after it changes. Security and safety are enhanced by flooring sensors because the sensors are able to relay the locations of occupants in a building. In the case of a fire or other emergency, such dynamic data can help save lives.

Monitor from any Location

A building smart enough to know the location of its occupants can provide detailed information used to manage the systems functioning in the space. The building’s management staff can program the systems to automatically respond to certain conditions, making it much more efficient to operate the building and providing a dynamic perspective on how the building is being used. Since the data can be sent to either a control center or a mobile “dashboard,” it gives managers the freedom to monitor the building’s use from any location – or even while on vacation!

IoT Intelligence at every step

Scanalytics is an intelligent floor sensor that anonymously tracks every step an occupant takes. This data is processed in the cloud and sent to end users via data dashboards for analysis. Smart gateways powered by Intel® technology provide edge analysis that leads to real-time insights and alerts.
